Announcing Follies 2012 – A Space Oddity

Held every year for over 30 years, the Follies has long been a highlight of the Warrandyte Theatre Company’s annual program. The Follies are staged in March each year to coincide with the Warrandyte Festival and engage the Company’s wide-ranging talents in an evening of comedy, song and dance.

The material for the Follies is all written locally by members and friends of WTC and is based around a theme which differs every year. The show itself is presented cabaret-style, giving audience members the opportunity to eat, drink and be merry whilst being entertained in Warrandyte’s unique style.

The Follies this year have the theme “Follies 2012 – A Space Oddity” and will feature intergalactic characters, earthlings and some well-known faces from TV and the silver screen, all caught up in a comedic and musical romp.

The Follies has also proven to be an ideal introduction for new members of WTC, irrespective of whether they have any previous stage experience. In short, it presents a wonderful opportunity for anyone with even the smallest of thespian inclinations to be part of a truly fun-filled production. It also presents a wide range of off-stage opportunities in lighting, sound, set design and construction, wardrobe and stage management.

Auditions will be held on Thursday 12 January (8pm) and Sunday 15 January (4pm) at the Mechanics Institute Hall, Yarra Street, Warrandyte. Anyone interested is invited to simply come along and join in the fun.

Theatre Group’s 2011 production of Amost, Maine

In a cold, clear, moonless Friday night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, residents of Almost find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised; hearts are broken. Love is lost, found, and confounded. But the bruises heal hearts mend—almost—in what has been described as “a comic, romantic round roundelay” by The Wall Street Journal, “a wooly midwinter night’s dream” by The Dallas Observer, “Love in the time of frostbite” by The New York Sun, “a sweet-natured valentine to fools and idioms” by The Los Angeles Times, and “an effervescent yet deeply felt tragicomedy” by The Melbourne Age. ALMOST, MAIN inventively explores the mysteries of the human heart, touching audiences with laughter, heartbreak and hope.

Held in October/November, “Almost, Maine” by John Cariani was our main play for 2011.

Major Sponsorship Announcement for 2011!

The Warrandyte Arts Association and the Warrandyte Theatre Company are delighted to announce that the 2011 series of plays has obtained significant sponsorship from local businesses, additional to the Bendigo Bank’s generous overall Arts Association support.

The Theatre Company attracts an annual audience of around 1500 to its three events. Whilst ticket prices help cover most essential costs, each production has its particular needs and it is only with very careful and clever financial management that the show goes on! Sponsorship will help cover costumes, backdrops, promotion and other special effects and props that help make a better production and season for the people of Warrandyte.

Our inaugural leading sponsor is the business Ruby Tuesday, located in the Goldfields shopping precinct. It will be well known to locals for its highly creative and individual jewellery.

Our level two sponsors are Gardiner-Mcinnes Real Estate, the Grand Hotel, the Warrandyte Café and Warrandyte Osteopathy.

Level three sponsors are Chapman Gardner builders, Love Living Landscapes and Character Building.

Level four sponsors are the IGA, Riveresque, Warrandyte B&B, Bradley J Curtis Electrician, Essentially Hair by Emma, I and S Ransom Electrician, NWD Carpentry, Robert McKellar Plumbing, Warrandyte Extensions & Renovations and Warrandyte Glass.

David Tynan, (then) President of the Theatre Company expressed his enormous gratitude to all sponsors, emphasising how popular sponsorship was. This is probably a great reflection on the work of the actors and crew and the enjoyment the productions bring to the community, he said.

The first play supported by the new sponsorship programme was the fabulous Follies, the Theatre Company’s most popular annual event. This year it was The Follies Goes to Town, a night of great skits, music and dancing in one fun-filled production.
